Native American Medicine Shields

November is National Native American Heritage Month and my art students learned about Native American history and the tradition of creating medicine shields. Students used thick quality drawing paper and researched their spirit animals to represent their personalities. This art lesson keeps them engaged and they enjoy seeing what their classmates create.

We have been busy in the Art room this year! Students have learned about line and value by drawing the horse, we celebrated International Dot Day by making dot art with warm/cool colors, and we created art for the annual State Fish Art Contest. Here are just a few examples of student art. We also have 40 Art Club members too!🎨

My art students learned about the return of the 17 year cicada insects. They were amazed that billions will rise from the ground to climb trees this summer. Once their wings grow out they'll fly around and make loud sounds near 90 decibels! When students realized they are harmless to humans, I think they enjoyed this art lesson. See the cicadas this summer or wait another 17 years!

Assemblages Like Louise Nevelson's

For Women's History Month my art students learned about the artist Louise Nevelson and her assemblages. They learned that she collected items that others had thrown away as unwanted or broken objects. Then she would assemble these into an interesting sculpture which was then painted in a monochromatic color scheme. Some were quite large while some fit on a table. My students collected objects that they found around their home which were broken, not being used or were no longer wanted. They assembled their objects into an interesting composition and then painted their sculpture in one color. I think they did great! #womenshistorymonth
