Art Exhibit at the City of Locust Library

It's time for our annual exhibit at the Locust, NC library. The art below was framed for the exhibit and will be on display from December 10th until February 2021. We've been using Google slides to share student art during the semester and this will be an opportunity for the library to fill their gallery with student art. Being fully remote has been a challenge but both recorded and live demonstrations have helped students with the art making process. I'm proud of their hard work and I look forward to our next semester. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

Halloween Art

Our student art is delightful and not too frightful.

There's some art that is digital and even some mythical.

But plenty of visuals from talented individuals

Our Online Art Class

Well, our art students are creating some amazing art...from home! Yes, our art classroom is completely virtual this fall. But that doesn't mean our students are slowing down! They are submitting art to me that is both impressive and very cool to look at too. Digital art is the future and my students are showing that they are more than ready to use these tools for creating art. Animation is especially fun to create and watch! Drawing with pencil, pen, and markers will always be favorites to use and my students are turning in some awesome drawings. Stay tuned for more digital art, animations, paintings and drawings this year!

STAR WARS Day May the 4th be with you.

My students look forward to May the 4th each year. Maybe it's because I look forward to it as well. There are still fans of the movies and the many characters too.
Here are a few of the characters that my students drew and submitted to me online today. May the 4th be with you! Don't forget tomorrow is the revenge of the fifth!

How I'm Feeling Today

I wanted to ask my art students how they were feeling so I demonstrated a way for them to be creative with their response. I explained how I used scissors and paper towel cardboard to vary the shape and angle of the cardboard. I did not use glue so that the facial expression could change for another photo in the future. I also asked them to write down why they were feeling that way. These are my examples of different facial expressions for inspiration. This was posted in their Google Classrooms today. Stay safe, stay home, make art! -Mr. B

Spring Art Show 2020

This is our spring art show presented as a virtual exhibit. We left the building in March but I was able to record some video and take a few photographs. Most of the student art remains safely inside our flat file storage for 2D art. Clay and paper mache' sculptures also remain inside the art room. I hope you enjoy our virtual art exhibit. Stay safe, stay smart and make art!

Making a God's Eye

I hope everyone is doing OK and staying safe at home. This Sunday is Easter so I thought I'd demonstrate how to make a God's eye. These have been made around the world for many years and they are a way to remind people about God's presence, love and protection. I hope you all will watch this demonstration and try this fun project this week. You'll see how easy they are to make for yourself and you can give them as a gift for someone else too! Remember to post your artwork on Google Classroom and on our Artsonia digital art gallery! Happy Easter!- Mr. B

Painting on a Rock

Hello art students! I hope you all are staying home and staying safe. I hope some of you are choosing to do art from the choice board too. This video was made to inspire you to keep making art!
Find an interesting rock to paint, wash it really good and then wash your hands too! I used acrylic paint for this painting and it is now a paperweight! I recently learned that there are paperweight museums! Hope you enjoy this video and remember, keep making art!

Painting With Coffee

I remember hearing some students say that they didn't have many art supplies at home. I wanted to create this video to demonstrate how a painting can be created by using cold coffee. This was my first try but I have heard of it being done. No brushes? Try using a Q-tip or cotton ball. I tried tea first because I do not drink coffee. The tea did not provide enough values for me so I tried using some coffee that we had in the kitchen. I learned a lot from this process and that is important. For example, I'll include more coffee grounds for darker values next time. So, if you try this at home with cold coffee let me know how it turned out! You can post your art on Artsonia or in our Google classroom. Take care, stay home, and stay safe. -Mr. B

Our Virtual Art Classroom

Welcome back to Art. I always say that at the beginning of each class. Today I thought I'd give everyone a tour of my home art studio. I brought back some props I had taken to school so that this virtual class might look somewhat familiar. While teaching art online, my goal is to keep to our routine as much as possible. Students were given a choice of art projects to complete first so we'll begin additional art lessons this week. Google Classroom is our method of communication. Stay safe, stay smart, and keep making art.-Mr. Bottoms

Teaching Art from my Studio

Hello everyone. I'll be teaching art from my home art studio and with Google Classroom. I'll also be posting videos of art demonstrations and instructions. The plan is to teach as close to our normal routine as possible. We'll start with our warm-up and then create some awesome art! You can work on the art assignments that were given out or another one from that choice board. Let me know on classroom if you have any questions. But first, I'm cleaning and dusting the studio. Here's a video of our cat trying to understand what this bell is all about! Until next time stay safe, stay smart, and keep making art!

Pottery Kiln 3 2020

I made this video to show what their glazed pottery looked like before being fired in our kiln. Students did a great job glazing their bowls and remembering to not glazing the bottom. Students learned about the vitrification that occurs at 2,000 degrees. Leonardo da Vinci said "Study the science of  art, and the art of science".

Art Conservation and Restoration

Art Club students are learning about art conservation and restoration. Club members are restoring several legacy paintings created by former 8th grade art students. Over time, these painting have begun to fade and were in need of cleaning. Art Club students were shown how to properly care for the art and prepare it for new layers of color. Once repaired, these paintings will be on display again inside our cafeteria. Students also learned how this can become a career option for those interested in art history and fine art painting.
